Writing practice: Continue with The Cat in the Hat in blank verse

We saw the cat admire what he’d caused –

His Things amok, walls, dress, and bed defaced.

“His ends,” I thought, “expend us as his means.

His joy is tearing down for power’s sake.”

I saw my sister’s face twist in alarm,

Her fear reflected in the fish’s eyes.

A spark became a flame that burned within

And forged a steely strength of fixed resolve.

[this ends act 4 – the protagonist has undergone a necessary internal change, found a strength he didn’t know he had, and resolved to conquer the dark force and not yield to it. the final act starts]

The fish then saw the change upon my face

While also noting mother walking home.

“This is your cue.” he said, “Assume your role.

“The spotlight’s yours, let’s go – it’s time to act!”

I grabbed my net and chased the little imps.

With cheetah-quick I made them prey, then prize.

“And you,” I fanged, as though from cat to cat,

“Your time is up. You’ve had your fun, now leave.”

“Where to begin,” the fish and Sally sighed.

“We cannot clean this mess ere mother comes.”

“That’s true,” said I, “but start we shall right now,

And we’ll not stop until we make amends.”

Not halfway through our task the door unclasped,

In walked our mother, holding back a gasp.

“Perhaps,” said I, not waiting its release,

“You passed a cat as you approached the house.

We misbehaved and let it in to play;

It ran amok before we sent it out.

We’re making right the Things it brought to bear.

The sooner we return, the faster done.”

[ok, almost done. kind of rushing through but i just want to finish]
