Writing practice: continue with The Cat in the Hat in blank verse
And so our lives presented us a choice,
When faced with overwhelming rush of tide:
To swim against the tow with children’s strength
Or ride the wave and hope ourselves to float.
We knew at once the proper stroke to take,
And yet the pulling force of current’s flow…
[yes, looking back when the bump made the children jump, with the rhyming couplet, i think that should be the end of act 1, where there is an indication of trouble ahead. everything after that is act 2, with the end of act 2 coming up in a bit]
But bubbles from the angel fish at once
Popped halos on the surface of our minds.
“Out out, damned spotted cat, I say, get out!
Remember, children, what your mother said!
You must bar entry all who’d enter here.
Let balance tip the scales for parents’ rules,
This cat has not your interests much at heart.
Be firm, be strong, you know what’s right, now act!
Too strong the lure of fun, these children thought,
“Oh fish, you just hate cats; your fear’s for you.”
[ok, that’s the end of act 2. tomorrow i’ll start act 3, where the danger presents its true form]
